The Police Guards Force was created in 1999 by the
Ministry of Public Order and engaged to protect any possible targets, such as
foreign embassies,
gorernment buildings, conrts, the metro stations e.t.c.
The Police Guards, whose majority has serred in the Greek Army's special
forces and also graduated from Universities, were chosen with an unimpeachable
procedure and trained in the Police Academy.
The new force soon proved successful, as the Guards displayed devotion,
ability and discipline in the exercise of their duties. That led the Police
command in the decision to use Guards for some of the police duties and to send
a big number of them in cities of the prorince, having as anobjective to improve
policing.
Nowadays, the Police Guards protect more than 620 places in Attica, they
go on patrol in the city's streets, and they also staff police operation squads
with very important results in the fight against crime, especially in the island
of Crete. The Greek citizens
recognize these efforts , as they believe that the Police Guards are the most
efficient part of the Police. With
the expansion of their duties by a new law and the hiring of new staff it is
estimated that the Police Guards will respond with an even better way to the
demands of the Police Command, especially
after safe
Athen's Olympic Games in 2004.
The Police Guards Union of Attica was set up in 2001, having as an objective to stand up for its members interests. With interventions to official quartens and the civil service it fights to improve the Guards working conditions and also co-ordinates and helps the unions of other cities. It provides to its members legal advise and cover, information about subjects of its responsibility and it brings out Guards work. The union's endeavour is acknowledged by its members, as it managed to give solution in most of the problems.
